being forced on to bladensburg road is not the only road being impacted. d.c. 295 also currently closed at route 50 as investigators brought in their search for the carjackers. we'll continue to keep you posted on that one. let's take you to a wide view of the map, other areas checking out ok here. as we zoom into the outer loop, we're finding drivers are still leaving at speed from 95 over to georgia avenue. shifting gears and take you over to interstate 270, we've been tracking the trip out of urbana all morning long. so far, so good. the yellow hasn't set in just yet. outside, no significant delays to report past 109 continuing down toward germantown road toward the split. also, your travel time, 66 drivers, good morning, virginia. from fairfax to the beltway, no problems. lax leak the inner loop is moving from -- looks like the inner loop is moving fine. no complaints approaching the toll plaza. still ahead, we'll have the

very latest out in northeast d.c. on outbound new york avenue and the police activity there. that's coming up at 5:09. back to you. an effort to fix a flat tire on the side of the beltway ended up costing a man his life. police say he pulled over on the shoulder near route one in new hampshire avenue yesterday afternoon when another car crashed into him, pinning him between the two vehicles. a third car slammed into them. emergency crews took two children and two other adults to the hospital. their injuries not life- threatening. >> a court hearing is scheduled today for the woman accused murdering her coworker at a bethesda clothing store. a judge will hear pretrial motions in the case against brittany norwood. she's accused of killing 30- year-old jayna murray in march after murray caught norwood taking items from the lululemon athletica store where they both worked. norwood staged the scene to try to make it look like she was a victim of attackers. the man suspected of being a serial arsonist makes his

first court appearance. investigators are charged maurice timothy dues for three fires and they say more charges are pending. d.c. authorities created an arson task force after a big fire in northeast last april which injured five firefighters. could the d.c. government become a legalized handgun dealer? councilman phil mendelssohn is sponsoring emergency legislation that would make the city a licensed firearms dealer. the bill would require anyone who wants to bring handguns into the city to have their guns shipped to government offices to get approval to carry them within d.c. borders. the council is expected to take up mendelssohn's proposal on tuesday. it is time now for my money and your money, too. >> we're inching near 13,000. >> i know. it is crazy. it is really climbing recently. after i we had a really bad month but it is looking pretty good. that's a jobs report. that's coming out for june this

morning on wall street. the market is pretty optimistic after some strong jobs data earlier in the week that helped stocks to rally yet again yesterday. now, checking the numbers, the dow stands at 12,719, jumped 93 points in trading. getting really close to 12,800 and as andrea says, almost 13,000. the nasdaq added 38 points and the s&p 500 climbed by 14. your iphone, ipod and ipad could be exposed to hackers. they've found a security flaw in apple's software and posted the code needed to modify apple's operating system on the site jailbreaker.com. apple says a fix for the problem will be available soon. well, how would you like a free xbox? all you have to do is buy an hp laptop valued at about $290 or more. dell has a similar deal , buy a select dell and get a free xbox 360. these are some of the deals

we have the police investigation update for you. some better news, we just learned that outbound new york avenue at bladensburg road has been reopened as has d.c. 295 at route 50. still ahead, we're taking a look at some of your virginia roads. that's coming up in my next traffic report at 5:17. back to you. making news at 5:10, a killing spree in grand rapids, michigan, ends with the suspect killing himself late last night. seven people were shot and killed in two homes, two of the victims were children. police say 34-year-old rodrick dantzler then took hostages in a third home where he eventually ended up taking his own life. the hostages there were not hurt. casey anthony has just over one week left to serve. a judge sentenced the florida mother to four years yesterday for repeatedly lying to police about her daughter caylee's disappearance. with what she's already served and time off for good behavior, anthony is scheduled to be released july 7th. it looks like weather is threatening the final space

cloud cover. here is a look at the satellite radar picture. we saw some pretty good storms go through yesterday. right now, we're storm-free for the moment. we will remain so for most of this morning. late this afternoon, it gets active. live doppler 9000 hd, cloudy conditions, no precip in our immediate area. just some light showers up to the north of us. more into pennsylvania. right now, temperatures still mild and muggy out there around 79 in downtown. 73 in leesburg. you get to the outer suburbs around 69 degrees in hagerstown. annapolis at a mild 79 degrees, maybe even warm for you. storms are more numerous today compared to yesterday. the flash flood watch is in effect this afternoon. goes through late tonight. heavy, severe thunderstorms are possible. the heaviest, the critical time, folks, listen up. 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. that will impact the evening commute for a lot of folks. here is a look at the severe risk outlook for the entire mid- atlantic. you see shaded in yellow. it does include the d.c. area.

investigation earlier this morning. we now have all of the lanes back going outbound and inbound and overall volume not looking bad past this point. branch avenue at pennsylvania avenue, this is a construction alert for you. we do have the road closed in both directions until 5:00 a.m. on monday. there is a detour in place. there's signs posted. so, those of who you travel that way are probably aware of that. let's move it over to constitution avenue at 20th street. the on-going construction project here obviously not affecting the flow of traffic this early. still very nice and quiet in this part of the district. as far as your trains are concerned, of course, we're tracking the rails and metro, vre, mark. all lanes are running on time. we're taking a look at a tree in the roadway causing problems out in columbia, maryland. we'll have an update for you at 5:38. now over to you. storms threatening our travel here and in florida where nasa is waiting to see if the weather here on earth will interfere with the final space shuttle mission. >> their commute is a little bit threatenned this morning.

the fueling started but there is a 70% chance thunderstorms are going to delay this morning's launch but at this point, it is still scheduled for 11:26 a.m. the four person shuttle crew will bring parts and supplies to the international space station when it takes off. >> at least seven people have been killed today in pakistan raising the death toll in this week's violence to 60. the clashes have been blamed on a bitter rivalry between two pit of political parties. one who represents people who migrated from india. the other mostly people moving to karachi in search of jobs. one man's will to live carried him through a 22-hour ordeal. last thursday, justin hipel wrecked his brother's motorcycle. he landed in some woods at the intersection of dumfries and bristow roads. his back was broken along with most of his ribs and nobody could see him because he landed in a ditch. he was unable to reach his cell phone to call for help. after 22 hours of trying to reach the phone, he finally

gets ahold of 911 and calls. he eventually airlifted to a fairfax hospital where he'll be there for more than ten days. >> police spent part of the night investigating a deadly crash on the parkway. four people were in the car that crashed on the roadway in the northbound lanes near route 197 and some had to be airlifted to the hospital. one of those people ended up dying. officers are shut down. both sides of the road overnight. accident reconstruction, reopen the parkway. just before the morning rush hour this morning. >> a virginia state police trooper who was killed last month in a traffic crash had three other auto accidents since joining the force in 2008. trooper adam bowen died june 24th when his cruiser collided with a car in king george county while he was responding to a call. pat troll car ricocheted into a light pole where the impact was so great it split the car in half. his speed at the time is still under investigation. in his three-year career as a trooper, he struck a deer, a

trailer and an embankment in separate crashes. a report on last month's crash that killed the 28-year-old is expected later this month. next year, maryland voters will decide if illegal immigrants will be able to pay instate tuition at maryland's colleges and universities. a referendum to get the issues placed on the ballot, there was an effort to get a referendum on the ballot. it has been approved. maryland state board of elections validated 63,000 signatures that were collected during a recent petition drive and that is nearly 8,000 more than organizers needed and there are more 40,000 additional signatures that still need to be examined to see if they're authentic. time for another "your money" report. >> jessica is back with a tour of the grocery aisle. >> gotta keep the blood sugar up. we've got a bunch of breakfast items laid out. if you followed your food bills closely, you know food is costing a pretty penny nowadays.

we all paid higher grocery bills last month. food prices jumped by 1.3% in june within a hair of the record high doesn't sound like a big deal to you. consider this. the food and agriculture organization's food price index is up 39% year-over-year. think of it this way. that's an extra $2,000 you're paying a year for food. so what's going on here? take a look inside the numbers. we're starting with sugar which you all know is pretty much in everything. sugar prices were up 14% in june alone. we're moving on to cereal prices. i've got a box of cereal here. we're not just talking about what's in the box. we're talking about the grains. they were down slightly. 1% in may but cereal prices are up 71%. 71% over the last 12 months. there are concerns about world production of grains and also third world countries are using more and more grains recently so demand is way up and we're going to move on to the meat

university of maryland's green bomb center is the subject of today's buddy check 9 report. >> evelyn david is about to celebrate another birthday. her 33rd. >> we're having a barbecue. it is called a second chance at life bash:00. >> a second chance for evelyn diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in 2009. >> i couldn't breathe when she told me i had breast cancer. >> you now have triple negative breast cancer. >> that, i almost lost my mind. >> triple negative is one of the most difficult strains of breast cancer to treat. it accounts for 15% to 20% of all breast cancers sand more common in african-american women and young women. >> triple negative means it is negative or doesn't express three things that we look for in breast cancer. estrogen receptor, projest rin receptor. >> dr. kevin cullen is director of the greenbaum cancer center. >> several of the drugs including the inhibitors

developed here at the university of maryland work only if those factors, those receptors are present on a tumor cell. >> since she couldn't use any of the critical drugs, her only option was chemotherapy. but in a new crin cal trial, researchers at the greenbaum center are looking at whether an experimental drug can help reprogram triple negative tumors to respond to the inhibiters. >> today, i'm going to run this gel. >> newly diagnosed triple negative patients will receive intinstat once daily for two to four weeks before surgery. the tumor will then be analyzed to see if it has shrunk or stopped growing. >> quite a lot of different criteria. >> dr. angela brody say early trial results are better than expected. >> so, in other words, the hormone resistant tumors into hormone responsive tumors.
